An International Celebration

Posted on 25 September 2004
Both the main church and the video-linked hall were full to overflowing as Ferndale Baptist Church, Southend-on-Sea, welcomed its new minister Rev. Dr. Stephen Dray on the 25th of September.

Civic dignitaries, the local MP, Sir Teddy Taylor, and the local Salvation Army band joined the ecumenical and international celebration. Greetings were received from around the world and included warm words of commendation for the new pastor from Professors J. I. Packer (Vancouver), Gerald Bray (Alabama) and from many other friends, former colleagues and students. The service was conducted by Colin Mitchell (New Frontiers) and addressed by Stephen Motyer (London School of Theology) and Professor Robin Dowling (formerly of the Bible Seminary in Medellin, Colombia) who, together, issued a call that both pastor and people be characterised by mutual servanthood and a commitment to unity. The induction itself was conducted by regional minister, Richard Soar, and he was accompanied by ministers representing both black and white communities, including the Revs. William Smith (formerly of Nevis) and Honesty Kachidza (Zimbabwe).
