Church Outing with a Difference

Posted on 24 November 2008
A happy re-union took place in Wesel, Germany at the weekend.

There, the Evangelical Church in Wesel, Germany expressed their amazement at the friends of Rudi and Doreen were so determined to be present at their induction service that 13 members of Ferndale travelled, in sometimes treacherous conditions, to be present at the event!

A lovely welcome was given to the group by Rudi and Doreen, who invited the tired pilgrims into their lovely new home and provided a welcome meal including a STUNNING home-made soup (Doreen, we need the recipe)! Accommodation was provided by Church members whose English was generally good and whose hospitality was warm and lavish.

On Sunday Rudi and Doreen were formally welcomed in to the church by the congregation and civic and local church leaders. Stephen preached on Ephesians 4:7-16 calling Rudi to a faithful, Word-centred, ministry and the Church to support and honour the gift that God had given them.

The Church thoughtfully provided a translator for the sermon and chose hymns that could also be sung in English.

Another lavish meal followed, before new friendships were celebrated by the singing (in English and German) of the old Baptist hymn, ‘Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love’ and by heartfelt goodbyes. It is hoped the ties between the churches will continue and develop and, already, plans are afoot for visits in each direction.

It was a brilliant weekend - one we will remember! It was great to see Rudi and Doreen in their new environment and to make new German friends. And if you have to spend hours on a minibus with a random assortment of people I can’t think of a better mixture!
