400 Years in English

Posted on 08 April 2011
On the 8th April, Rev. Norman Hookes, Roy Brown and a number of Methodist believers from the eastern side of Southend, were joined by store chaplain, Stephen, outside ASDA Shoeburyness to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the Authorised Version of the Bible.

Every Methodist circuit in the country has been allocated a portion of Scripture to write by hand so as to complete the whole Bible in eight bound volumes. Given a passage from Jeremiah 53, passers-by were invited to join in ‘writing the Bible’. Anglicans, Salvationists, Baptists, Catholics and others made it an ecumenical event. Luanna Julian from the store obliged and, since he was passing by, the local MP, James Duddridge, was prevailed upon too.

Stephen was delighted with the day: it certainly brought the Christian faith face-to-face with the many shoppers attending the store.
